WILTON, Conn. ? Bright smiles, wide eyes and a few tears were on display at Miller-Driscoll School Monday morning for the start of the school year.
Hundreds of anxious, curious youngsters waved goodbye to their parents and summer vacation as they hopped off buses to meet their teachers and see their classrooms for the first time.
Francesco Tomas, 6, was smiling but quiet as he headed in for his first day of first grade. His father, Frank, brought him along. The start of the school year is good, Francesco said, because I get to see my friends again.
Abby Petrie, 5, rode the bus for the first time and then waited with her dad, David, and some of her classmates before heading inside for her first day of kindergarten. Abby, whose backpack seemed almost as big as she was, was looking forward to using her crayons.
Shes a little nervous, but shes absolutely excited, David Petrie said.
Kindergarten teacher Sal Giaimo waited outside his classroom to greet his new students while waving to former students. Giaimo says the first day of classes is always fun. We dont get a lot of sleep the night before, he said. But its a blast. You have one chance to make a first impression. Youre a kids first teacher.
Even though some kids may lament the start of the new year, Giaimo says more kids want to be in school than not.
Mom Karen Sackowitz agreed. She dropped off her daughter, second grader Alyssa, 7, for her first day at Miller-Driscoll, as well as her son, Noah, 9, who was starting his first year at Cider Mill School as a fifth-grader. Its fun and sad for me. My buddies are gone for the day, said Karen after seeing Alyssa off.
Sackowitz's children are new to the district, and her hopes was that they would have a nice start. Id like to know that they like their teachers and met some new friends. Thats a good day, she said.
