Kristin Mazzeos first-grade class at Our Lady of Fatima School in Wilton played store on Friday, with students buying items and making change. No, Mazzeo was not preparing the students for a trip to the mall. She was teaching them about coins and their values, and she wanted to see how well they understood the material.
I want them to have fun so they enjoy coming to school, Mazzeo says of her teaching style. Playing games is a typical strategy for getting the kids up from their desks and experience their lessons. The games keep the kids from becoming bored with worksheets and give Mazzeo a chance to see whether they understand the material.
She also took her students to the Discovery Museum in Bridgeport during the sink and float portion of their science instruction. At the museum, the students learned about buoyancy through hands-on experiments with water.
The kids are not the only ones having fun in Mazzeos classroom this year. She says her class has made her job enjoyable as well. Its a great group of kids this year, Mazzeo says. It makes coming to work fun.
Though most of her day is spent with the students, they are not the only ones that have made her time at Our Lady of Fatima enjoyable. She also likes the community the other faculty members and parents have created at the school. Before joining Our Lady of Fatima three years ago, she taught fifth grade for one year in a public school.
