The roads in Wilton are covered in snow and ice from Tuesdays storm but the weather has not caused many crashes yet, said Lt. Donald Wakeman of the Wilton Police Department. Fewer cars were on the road Tuesday and Wakeman said drivers may be getting practice driving in poor road conditions.
Maybe people are getting used to driving in this, Wakeman said. Only two accidents had been caused by the winter weather as of 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
The first accident was reported just before 5 a.m. Tuesday morning when a vehicle slid into the car in front of it near Chestnut Hill Road and Westport Road. No injuries were reported, Wakeman said.
The second crash took place around noon when a vehicle got stuck in a snow bank on Danbury Road by the Sharp Hill Road turn, on the northbound side.
Anyone travelling in the bad weather should be careful entering roadways and intersections because snow banks are getting higher and decreasing visibility, Wakeman added.
An ice storm warning has been issued until 6 p.m. Wednesday in Wilton and the winter storm warning has been cancelled by the National Weather Service.
One to 3 inches of snow is still expected to accumulate Tuesday afternoon along with one-quarter to one-half inch of ice by late Wednesday evening. The snow will be expected to stop Tuesday afternoon, but freezing rain and sleet will continue into Wednesday afternoon.
