Wilton Center Roadwork To Slow Things Down

WILTON, Conn. — Driving through Wilton Center may soon become a lesson in patience as the town begins installing new curbs, First Selectman William Brennan said.

“There will be a construction advisory on River Road into the Center over the next few months,” Brennan said at Tuesday night’s Board of Selectmen meeting. “But it’s going to be a major improvement as we continue to build a better Wilton.”

Residents can expect River Road to be down to one lane with flaggers directing traffic as construction workers dig up each side of the roadway, said Brennan. The construction zone will run from the Center up to Old Ridgefield Road and include work on some side streets.

Wilton received state funds for the project through a $200,000 Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant earlier this year.

Although the project may be burdensome for residents over the summer, Brennan said he expects the results to make up for the problems. The curbs will make the roads safer, signaling to drivers who may drift toward the side of the street, said Brennan. He also pointed to granite curbs as a better controller of water and tougher than black asphalt curbs when faced with a snowplow.

Ultimately, said Brennan, curbs provide a cleaner look to the town roads. “It makes the town look good,” he said. “If we want to continue with our economic development, we have to invest in our infrastructure. No pain – no gain.”
