WILTON, Conn. Two days into reviewing Wilton test scores, school administrators plan to focus on areas where students still need improvement.
Overall, Wilton sophomores fared well on the Connecticut Academic Performance Test, outscoring other high school students across the state. On the Connecticut Mastery Test, given to elementary and middle school students, Wilton children scored well in nearly all categories.
"These scores were just released and we're taking a preliminary look," said Assistant Superintendent Tim Canty. "Generally, we are pleased with the CMT, especially the reading and math in grades four to eight."
Fifth- and eighth-grade students also performed well on the science testing, said Canty. But some elementary scores fell short.
"We're going to take a good hard look at Grade 3," said Canty.
Third-grade scores showed declines from 2010 except in the percentage of students at or above proficiency in math; 92.7 percent of students achieved that level.
At the high school level, Canty said students continue to do well in the science and writing tests but appear to be slipping in their reading test scores.
Since the first tests in 2006, Wilton students consistently outperform their counterparts across the state. Administrators will now look at how Wilton scores against comparable school districts, particularly neighboring communities, said Canty.
Throughout the rest of the summer, school officials plan to develop a more detailed report on this year's test scores to present this fall to the Board of Education.
"Basically, you get two results from these tests," said Canty. "First, you look at where programs can be improved. And, you also look at how individual students perform and where they need help."
