WILTON, Conn. A magical run came to a screeching halt for the Wilton 9-10 Little League team on Sunday. In a battle of undefeated teams, North Stamford's bats and wild pitching by Wilton ended Wilton's shot at a district title. North Stamford pulled away in the late innings, taking the District 1championship, 12-5.
The game got off to a rocky start for Wilton, which gave up three runs in the top of the first. Wilton had its best opportunity to strike back in the bottom of the third, when it trailed 4-1. Wilton had the bases loaded twice, but could manage to push only one run across.
Wilton pitching struggled in the top of the fourth, when North Stamford pulled away on just one hit. Five runs scored on three walks, two hit batsmen, and a bases-clearing double.
Wilton mounted a slight comeback with Ian Blatenfold driving in his second run of the game. The deficit was too much to overcome, though.
Wilton went 7-1 in the tournament and outscored opponents 73-48. The 12 runs given up in the title game were the most allowed by Wilton in the tournament.
