WILTON, Conn. -- The Wilton White third grade football team defeated Westport, 15-8, Saturday evening at Fujitani Field, recording the first victory of their young careers in a Fairfield County Football League game.
The tone of the game was set early on Westports first possession. The Warriors swarming defense, led by Josh White, Matt Gulbin, Jason Bivona, Logan Brady, Blake Pagano-Walley and Davis Cote prevented Westport from moving the ball and forced a punt. Taking possession at the Westport 40, the Warrior offense went to work. With Sean Sullivan and Cote grinding out yards, the Warriors moved the ball to the 10. With the Warrior offensive line of Michael Coffey, Henry Sell, Charlie Hastings, Jack Fielden, Michael Gruseke, Gulbin and White paving the way, halfback Sullivan swept around left end for a touchdown from the 10. Quarterback Everett Andersen passed to Alex Smith for two points to put Wilton up 8-0.
On the ensuing possession, the Warriors shut Westport down and took possession at the 40 again. On the second play from scrimmage, Pagano-Walley took the handoff, bolted around left end and rambled 35 yards for the score. On a busted play, Andersen kept the ball and beat the linebacker to the flag for the extra point making the score 15-0.
Westport was more competitive in the second half and managed a lone touchdown, but the Wilton defense was up to the task. Big hits and tough defense by Spencer Dean, Quinn Wiseman, Luke ONeill, Jake Eagan, Connor Healey, Daniel Gruseke and Logan Brady allowed Wilton to hold onto the lead and the victory.
Sean Sullivan put an exclamation point on the victory with a huge hit for a loss on a Westport running back on the last play of the game.
