Willowbrook's DiGiacomo is County Double Winner

RYE, N.Y. -- Dan DiGiacomo missed the Westchester County Swimming Championships last year because he was sick so he was looking forward to making up for lost time. The 14-year-old Willowbrook Swim & Tennis Club swimmer did just this Thursday on the final night of the 86th annual meet at Playland Pool.

DiGiacomo won the 14-and-under 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 50.37 seconds, and also took the high-point award with 30 points. “I did the first day last year,” said DiGiacomo, a freshman-to-be at Horace Greeley High School. “I knew this has always been a fun meet so I knew I had this year.”

DiGiacomo went faster in the final, after going 51.08 seconds in his heat. That time gave him the top seed going into the final. DiGiacomo had a plan for the final and he followed it.

“In the first half I wanted to stay in control and then in the second half, I wanted to bring it home as hard as I could,” DiGiacomo said.

Leading through the first 50, DiGiacomo kicked it into overdrive in the final 25 yards. “About a quarter of the way into the second lap, I had a lot of energy to bring it home,” he said. “I was close to one of my best times and it feels good. It always feels good to win, too.”
