Montgomery County Councilmember and Democratic county executive nominee Will Jawando suffered a heart attack during his regular pickup basketball game on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 5, his office confirmed on Monday.

Friends who were with Jawando acted quickly, and he was immediately taken to George Washington University Hospital, according to his office.

Doctors successfully placed a stent.

Jawando is now resting comfortably, and his doctors expect him to make a full recovery because of his strong overall health, his office said.

He is expected to be discharged later this week and return home to recover with his wife, Michele, and their children.

The health scare comes as Jawando, an at-large member of the County Council, is in the middle of his campaign for Montgomery County Executive. Official county records confirm Jawando remains a member of the current County Council.

His campaign made clear Monday that the heart attack is expected to temporarily slow him down, not sideline him entirely.

"He's going to take a few weeks to follow their guidance, which means a lighter schedule," his campaign said in a statement posted to his X account. "But he's still working and will be back out in the community as soon as the doctors say he's ready."

The campaign also said Jawando remains focused on the November election.

His County Council office will remain open while Jawando adjusts his activities in the coming weeks, according to the official statement.

County Executive Marc Elrich was among those who publicly wished Jawando well after news of the heart attack broke Monday.

"I was very concerned to hear about Councilmember Will Jawando's heart attack this weekend, and I'm relieved that he received immediate care and is doing well," Elrich said.

Elrich also thanked the friends who sprang into action and the doctors, nurses and staff who treated Jawando at GW Hospital.

Fellow Councilmember Andrew Friedson said he and his wife were thinking of Jawando, Michele and their four children and were relieved by the quick response to the medical emergency.

Friedson said Jawando is now "on the road to recovery," adding that he looks forward to seeing his colleague back at the County Council.

Jawando's family thanked friends, neighbors, colleagues and supporters for their messages and prayers and has asked for privacy while he recovers.

"Michele and the kids have asked for privacy while he recovers," his staff posted. "We're grateful to our volunteers, supporters, and neighbors across the county and state for the messages, calls, and prayers. We'll keep you posted with updates."
