Hopeton Labeach, 55, was arrested and charged with grand larceny, after police say he tried to scam an 89-year-old Selkirk resident.
According to the article, Labeach telephoned the woman, told her she had won a cash prize and instructed her to send money to a White Plains address to claim her winnings.
Labeach allegedly kept some of the money and sent the remainder overseas, according to the article.
Police are charging Labeach under a “hate crimes” statute for specifically targeting elderly victims, the article said.
Labeach is facing felony counts of money laundering and fraud.
In addition to facing charges locally, Labeach is wanted by police in Georgia for similar offenses, according to the article.
