The White House was briefly placed on lockdown Saturday evening, May 23, after apparent gunshots were heard near the complex, according to authorities.
Reporters near the North Lawn heard gunfire just after 6 p.m. Eastern near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, DC, close to the west side of the White House complex and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.
NBC News reported that its team at the White House heard between 20 and 30 gunshots around 6 p.m. Secret Service agents then urged reporters gathered outside on the North Lawn to run inside the press briefing room.
ABC News reported that the suspect later died.
CBS News had earlier reported that two people, described as a suspect and a bystander, were taken to a hospital. The suspect had been listed in critical condition, and the second person was in serious condition.
The bystander was conscious and breathing, according to CNN Chief Law Enforcement and Intelligence Analyst John Miller.
Miller reported that the 21-year-old suspect reached into a bag, pulled out a gun, and shot at Secret Service officers, who returned fire.
President Donald Trump was at the White House at the time. There was no immediate report that he was moved from the complex.
FBI Director Kash Patel said on social media that federal agents were on scene and supporting the Secret Service.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or a motive.
The incident comes during a heightened security period around the White House, following other security scares in Washington, DC, this spring.
