Whirlwind Diver Commits to Virginia

NEW CANAAN, Conn. — It was a great month for New Canaan YMCA’s Whirlwind diver Katie Warburg. On Nov. 4, Warburg made history by becoming the first diver to win the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship in four consecutive years. Five days later, the Wilton High School senior signed a letter of intent to attend and dive for the University of Virginia. Finally, on Nov. 18, Warburg closed out her high school career by defending her state diving title and winning her second straight State Open diving title.

Warburg began her diving career in 2001 at the age of 8 and a few months later moved to Coach Joe Somma and the New Canaan YMCA Whirlwind Diving team.

“I have such a close relationship with Joe, he has become almost a second dad and is a huge part of my life,’’ said Warburg, who credits her involvement with the Whirlwind Diving program at the Y for her success. “I needed to have a lot of discipline to grow as a diver. I kept focus that my ultimate goal was to become the best diver I could be, to not take any shortcuts, and that choosing diving would be the best in the long run.”

After 10 years of working with Somma, Warburg has an impressive resume of local and national accomplishments as she prepares to join Virginia.

It’s been an honor working with Katie these last 10 years and watching her grow not only as a talented diver," Somma said, "but as a focused and determined young woman, as well, which is our goal for the Whirlwind program.”

Warburg is excited to have the opportunity to compete at Virginia. “They give you all the tools you need to pave your way to success. I’m so excited to utilize everything they give me to reach my full potential.”
