FAIRFIELD, Conn. Summer officially arrived in Fairfield last week, with the summer solstice on Wednesday and the last day of Fairfield public schools on Thursday. That means the summer reading season is now under way.
Both the Fairfield Public Library and the Pequot Library have summer reading lists and contests for younger children and teenagers. But what will their parents be reading this summer?
If you go by best-seller lists, the fiction book to read is Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James. The three books in the series have been in the top three spots on The New York Times Best Sellers list for many weeks.
When asked about Fifty Shades, best-selling author Ann Patchett told attendees of a recent book reading in Wilton that she didnt care if they read porn but that it should be "good porn."
Even though Fifty Shades dominates several best-seller lists, other books are standing their ground, including A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin, the book that inspired the popular HBO show, and recent release Kiss the Dead by Laurell K. Hamilton, an account of a vampire hunter searching for an abducted teenager.
That popularity broaches the question, What will be the next big book? The question that usually follows that is, When will I have time to read it?
At the Westport Barnes & Noble, one of the books that sellers cannot keep on the shelves is Gone Girl. Also, The Amature, a nonfiction book by Edward Klein, is another they said is selling well.
But if following whats hot isnt something youre interested in, most libraries have summer reading lists and they're not just for kids.
For example, the Pequot Library in Southport is running a summer reading program for adults as well as younger children and teens. Like the teen contest, the grown-up version lets Pequot visitors fill in a form once they complete a book. That form then becomes their entry to a drawing for a prize of their choosing, including gift cards to iTunes and local restaurants.
As for selections, the Pequot Library recommends the Library Journals Summer Reading lists for both men and women.
The mens list is filled with thrillers, such as E. Duke Vincents The Camelot Conspiracy: A Novel of the Kennedys, Castro & the CIA and Youre Next by Gregg Hurwitz.
The womens suggestions include beach-themed fare like Summer Rental by Mary Kay Andrews and international travel novels like Sarah-Kate Lynchs Dolce di Love.
