More than 130 Westport students and their parents, including Connor Mitnick and his father Bruce, worked side-by-side Sunday doing construction, painting and landscaping jobs for various town organizations. This event, called Service Sunday, was led by the Service League of Boys, a parent-son community service club at Staples High School.
During Service Sunday, members of SLOBs, as the group is popularly known, complete various wish list projects submitted by Westport nonprofits. This year, the second annual Service Sunday, SLOBs completed 17 projects for Homes with Hope, the Department of Human Services, A Better Chance of Westport, Project Return and the Levitt Pavilion.
"It's really great to see so many people coming together to do so much good in their community," said Staples junior David Kalb, co-founder of SLOBs.
Some of the projects completed Sunday included painting the community room at the Gillespie Center, an emergency shelter operated by Homes with Hope, a nonprofit that battles homelessness. Also, in preparation for summer, the benches at the Levitt Pavilion were painted and the grounds were cleaned.
Although Service Sunday is led by SLOBs, members of the Westport chapter of the National Charity League, a mother-daughter philanthropic organization, completed projects at the Bacharach Community, three homes operated by Homes with Hope that provide emergency shelter for mothers and their children.
"Nothing is as moving to me as seeing parents and their teenagers working together to improve their own community," said Susan Kalb, David's mom, and SLOBs co-founder.
