Westport Republicans Select Education Candidate

WESTPORT, Conn. – Jeannie Smith, a Westport mother of four and former teacher, was endorsed by the Republican Town Committee as a Board of Education candidate Wednesday night for the elections in November.

"This is a dream come true," said Smith, who has been involved in the education world for about 15 years. "I'm so honored to be considered."

After graduating from Fordham University in 1994 with a master's in teaching, Smith worked as a teacher in Westchester County for 11 years. In 2008, she moved to Westport with her family, where she served on the St. Paul Christian School board.

Bob Zappi, chairman of the Republican Town Committee, said the party is happy to have Smith as a candidate. "She's very qualified, and very enthusiastic," Zappi said. "She has our full support."

The committee, Zappi added, is still looking for another Board of Education candidate to run alongside Smith.

On Wednesday night, the committee also voted unanimously to recommend resident Hope Feller to the party's Vacancy Committee as a candidate for the Planning and Zoning Commission. Currently, the party has endorsed incumbent Cathy Walsh, and newcomers Chip Stephens and Jack Whittle as Planning and Zoning candidates.
