Police Chief John Troxell said that in Weston, every month is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. We are very active and proactive with motor vehicle enforcement, especially when it comes to cell phones, speeding and DUIs, said Troxell.
In March, the House of Representatives declared April to be National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Troxell said officers are stepping up efforts by handing out fliers on distracted driving when a driver is caught with a cell phone or other distractions.
Drivers are only capable of doing so many things. When theyre on their phone or changing a CD, theyre sharing that time with driving, said Troxell.
Officers are handing out fliers from FocusDriven.org, which provides information about what can happen to drivers who are distracted. Distracted drivers do not see up to 50 percent of the driving environment, the flier says. The fliers also include tips to be prepared to deal with the temptation to use a cell phone and how to tell another person not to talk on the phone while driving.
