Westlake Seniors Begin New Chapter

THORNWOOD, N.Y. - Seniors at Westlake High School turn a page in their lives as they leave as the class of 2011.

Poor weather forced the graduation ceremony inside the gymnasium Friday as the seniors walked the halls of Westlake one last time as high school students.

Principal Keith Schenker addressed the graduating class with advice to cherish each day going forward.

"You should comfort in the fact that there is never a time in your life that you did not find enjoyment and meaning in your experiences," Schenker said in his speech.

The Class of 2011 graduates 146 seniors. The class will leave Westlake with many accomplishments to their name. Over 85% of the students received scholarships and awards based on their academic performances, totaling over $11 million.

Michael Diamond was named the valedictorian of the class and will head to Vanderbilt University in the fall. Alexis Carra was the salutatorian and will attend Fordham University.

In her salutatory address, Carra noted the unity of the class of 2011 and reminded her fellow classmates to continue to strive for what they believe in.

"It is ironic that in the closeness of our grade, we have learned the dignity of what it means to be an individual. For each individual, high school has been a time for growth," Carra said.

The students of Westlake received their diplomas and were sent off to future endeavors. As Schenker and the other speakers mentioned, the future for the class of 2011 is bright. Over 187 institutions of higher learning have accepted one or more Westlake seniors and 80% of the students will attend four year universities this fall.
