Westhill's and Trinity Catholic's boys basketball teams moved on but Stamford suffered a narrow defeat in state tournament action Wednesday night.
Westhill defeated Hillhouse, 75-72, in a Class LL second-round contest and Trinity advanced in Class M action with a 64-36 rout of Nonnewaug. Stamford fell to St. Joseph, 52-50, in the Class LL tournament. Westhill and Trinity Catholic advance to quarterfinal round games on Friday.
Antwaun Boyd scored 24 points and Ervin Thompson added 19 for the 11th-seeded Vikings (17-5), who took control of the game by outscoring No. 6 Hillhouse (18-3) 26-20 in the final quarter. Tony Dobbinson and Tim Simmons added nine each for Westhill, which will host No. 14 Glastonbury in Friday's quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Glastonbury advanced with a 45-44 upset of No. 3 Hartford Public.
The 18th-seeded Crusaders crushed No. 2 Nonnewaug behind 25 points from Jonathan Boykin. Schadrac Casimir added 12 for Trinity (15-9), which led 27-17 at halftime and put the game away with a 23-9 run in the third quarter. Trinity travels to play No. 10 Bethel Friday.
Stamford dropped another close contest to No. 2 St. Joseph. The Cadets also beat the No. 18 Black Knights, 51-50, two weeks earlier. Anthony Davis scored 16 for Stamford, which finishes the season 16-9.
