Westhill Sprinter 2nd in 2 State Races

Westhill senior Dillin Smith has to look at the silver lining from Tuesday's Class LL track and field championships. The sprinter finished second in the 100- and the 200-meter races at Willowbrook Park in New Britain.

Smith's performance highlighted the day for the Vikings, who finished 14th with 19.5 points. Nicole Ambrosecchio finished eighth in the 1,600 for Westhill's girls. Stamford's boys and girls did not accumulate any points.

Smith, who won the 100 in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championships, was seeded fourth after the preliminaries with a time of 11.37. He ran 11.26 in the final, which Manchester's Algernon Johnson won in 11.24. In the 200, Smith finished second to Danbury's Dele Owoye. Smith ran 22.74, while Owoye won in 22.53. Owoye topped Smith in a photo finish in the same event at the FCIAC meet.

Also for Westhill, Rafael Bello finished tied for eighth in the high jump. The sophomore cleared 5 feet, 10 inches. Westhill also took seventh in the 4 x 100 relay.

Ambrosecchio, a sophomore, ran 5:26.91 in the 1,600. Freshman Claire Howlett ran 5:41.55 and finished 11th. They were the top runners from the FCIAC in the race.

Manchester won the boys meet with 75 points, followed by Danbury with 74. Danbury's girls won with 108 and Norwich Free Academy was second with 73. Complete results are available on casciac.org
