The Westhill High tennis duo of John Petrini and Brandon Pomerance won the State Open Doubles finals Wednesday, defeating Daniel Adajian and Reid Andren from Fairfield Ludlowe High School, 6-2, 6-3.
The final was played under sunny skies on center court at Yale University. The Westhill pair jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set after a quick break and kept the momentum going. The second set was tighter, with both pairs committing a few unforced errors in serving and at the net. Eventually, Petrini and Pomerance built a 4-2 lead and rolled to a decisive second set win.
The win is Westhill High's first State Open title ever.
"This means the world to me after we have put so many hours into this project. The guys were practicing countless hours on the serve placements, returns, closing the net, and different formations," coach Patrik Vician said. "They have built an excellent team chemistry by playing doubles scrimmages, and they relied on each other during the tournament. This win feels fantastic. This duo combined tennis power and intelligence and outclassed all opponents in the state of Connecticut. I'm very proud of them. I'm wishing John all the best at Quinnipiac University, and I'm looking forward to working with Brandon again next year."
