WESTPORT, Conn. By the look of the Google homepage Wednesday, one might think the website wasnt loading properly. But the black censor bar over the Google logo is intentional. It was placed there in protest of two proposed bills before Congress.
The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House and the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate were drafted to halt piracy and copyright infringement on the Internet, supporters say.
But Google and other websites have gone dark in protest of the bills, including Wikipedia, Reddit and Mozilla. They say SOPA and PIPA would censor the web and stifle the free exchange of information on the Internet.
These websites are among some urging visitors to sign a petition that tells Congress to vote no on the bills. The Senate is expected to vote Jan. 24, although the bill seemed to be losing support.
