Eggen was laid off earlier this year in a round of mass cuts. His ex-wife, Stephanie Armour, confirmed Eggen's death to the Washington Post. No foul play is suspected and a formal cause is pending an autopsy.
A GoFundMe created by Jenna Johnson for Eggen's children, Madeleine and Max, had a goal of raising $45,000.
Eggen joined The Washington Post in 1997, starting as a Metro reporter before covering the Justice Department, national security, and the White House, according to his Washington Post bio. He later moved into editing, serving in several senior roles, including Senior Politics Editor, and has contributed to Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage in 2002 and 2022, his bio says.
NOTUS Editor in Chief Tim Grieve confirmed Eggen was set to start at the company.
"We hired Dan to join us at NOTUS after some of the best reporters in DC told us he was the best editor they’d ever had," Grieve wrote. "We were excited to have him here, and I think he was equally excited to be coming here. Deepest condolences to everyone who loved him."
