Friday nights girls lacrosse Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference Championship saw the No.4 seed Wilton High defeat two seed New Canaan, 12-8 at Jack Casagrande Field at Brien McMahon High School.
On Tuesday night the Warriors came back from a 7-0 deficit to beat top seeded Darien to move on to the championship game. Then within the first 13 minutes of Fridays game Wilton found themselves up 7-0 over the New Canaan High Rams and did not want history to repeat itself.
That was eerie, Co-head coach of Wilton Ciara Thurlow said, That is a long time to hold that lead. Unfortunately, for the Rams the game did not end with an excellent comeback as the Warriors captured the title.
The Warriors went up 7-0, on the strength of seniors Tessa Howard and Rachel Lowrie recording hat tricks, but the Rams decided not to go down quietly, scoring four unanswered goals by four different players. All I was thinking was that we cant do a Darien, said Howard who tacked on a fourth goal in the second half and was named the M.V.P. of the playoffs.
Even with the Rams attacking the Wilton net hard, they never cut the deficit to less than three, being stopped by the combination of the Warriors holding onto the ball and many great saves by junior Maddie Kratz in goal for Wilton. We asked everyone to step up their game a little bit and she stepped her game up a lot, the other co-head coach of the Wilton team Cindy Wiseman said.
Wiltons offense was led by Howards four goals, Lowries three, and freshman Casey Pearsall and senior Alexi Farmakis had two each. Senior Anjalie Christie scored four goals to lead New Canaan. Both teams will now prepare for the state tournament.
