Walsh Moves To Fairfield's Finance Board

FAIRFIELD, Conn. ? The shuffle of high-ranking Republican town officials is now complete.

Former Selectman James Walsh officially was appointed to replace current Selectman Kevin Kiley on Fairfield’s Board of Finance.

“In the 10-plus years that I've known [Walsh], he has always worked hard, he has always been fair, he’s always been reasonable, and above all, he’s always put the interests of the town ahead of everything else,” Kiley said.

Walsh resigned June 14 from the Board of Selectmen after two years on Fairfield’s executive body. He stepped down after concerns were raised about his work as an attorney, representing clients in applications before Fairfield’s zoning boards.

Kiley, a 15-year veteran of the Board of Finance, was chosen by the Republican Party to fill the vacant slot earlier this month. First Selectman Michael Tetreau and Selectman Cristin McCarthy Vahey agreed July 5 to appoint Kiley. They also agreed with the Republicans’ nomination of Walsh to fill Kiley’s now-vacant finance board seat, by a unanimous vote Wednesday.

“I've never heard anyone question [Walsh’s] hard work, or the enthusiasm and passion with which he goes about this job,” Tetreau said. “That enthusiasm has been a great help to this board and to the town.”

As a member of the Board of Finance, Walsh will be one of nine people tasked with handling all of the town’s accounts, approving town spending and setting the tax rate each year.

Walsh said Wednesday he always wanted a seat on the board and was happy to finally earn that position.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Walsh said. “There’s a lot of challenges ahead.”
