The incident happened on Saturday, April 18 at approximately 10:51 a.m., when Wallington police responded to a medical call for a person having trouble breathing at a residence on Strong Street, according to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella.
Officers arrived and found a 74-year-old man with multiple stab wounds to his torso and leg, Musella said.
The victim was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center with critical injuries and has since been upgraded to stable condition, authorities said.
Police also located a 42-year-old man outside the home, later identified as Sean McAvinue, who had an apparent hand injury and blood on his clothing, Musella said. McAvinue was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for treatment.
Detectives determined McAvinue used multiple kitchen knives to stab the victim a total of eight times, striking his head, torso, and legs, according to the prosecutor.
Later that same day, McAvinue was charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, Musella said. He was lodged in the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Superior Court in Hackensack, authorities said.
