Voting Places Shift for Some Darien Residents

DARIEN, Conn. – You’d better double-check your polling place in Darien before the next election, because it may not be the same place you’re used to voting. According to the registrars of voters, recent redistricting has changed some of the district lines in town.

District Two will now be voting at Tokeneke Elementary School, not Darien Town Hall, where voters currently cast ballots. Residents in District Six, who now vote at Tokeneke, will vote at Town Hall instead. Democratic Registrar of Voters Tom Dunn said this change was made so District Two’s voting place will be within its borders.

When presenting the changes to the Board of Selectmen on Monday night, Dunn said the registrars' office has been going through hundreds of streets to make sure that each district has an equal population. None of the changes are official yet, because they still have to be approved by the Representative Town Meeting. But Dunn said that once approved, they will be in place for the next election.

District Three, which covers the southwest corner of town, will undergo the biggest change. The lower portion of the district will become part of District Five, and District Three’s borders will be stretched northward to include parts that currently lie in Districts One and Five.

Dunn said the changes will also slightly alter the number of RTM seats in each district. Districts One and Three will each lose a seat, while Districts Five and Six will each gain one. All currently elected RTM members will serve out their current terms, even though in some cases they may no longer live in those districts.

Dunn said that once the changes are approved, the registrars' office plans to send the information to voters three times, as well as post the information on its website and possibly at Town Hall or the library. To see which district your house currently is in, check the directory on the Darien website.
