Voting in Bedford Under Way, Next Rush in Afternoon

BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. — With Election Day under way Tuesday morning, voters from around Bedford took time out to vote at the Bedford Hills Community House, one of several polling places in and around the village.

“I think more people should come out when it’s a local election. It means more,” said District 5 chairperson Fran Tucker, who has worked the polling spot for 12 years. “You’re vote counts more here for the local than it does for the presidential.”

By 9:30 AM, the morning rush had been through and off to work. Those on staff are anticipating more throughout the day. “The next rush will be after school as the parents come in,” says worker Kathy O’Connell, “and then tonight after the trains come in.”

For Tucker, the after school rush is one she especially cherishes. “It’s nice to see the parents showing their children how the system works,” she said. “They explain how to vote, and how important it is.”

The importance of the election process is felt throughout the polling station, as O’Connell believes those that vote have a right to complain and demand change, while those who do not vote should not complain unless they share in the process. “I refuse to listen to any arguments on politics from someone who didn’t come out to vote,” O’Connell said. “You don’t have the right to an opinion. You had a right to vote!”

The voting process at the Community House is not a very long one, as the steps needing to be taken are fairly short. Once signed in, the voter then takes their ballot to the area that holds the privacy sleeves. Once the ballot is placed in the privacy sleeve, it is taken to the booth to be voted on. Once finished, the ballot is brought to the machine to be scanned.
