VALHALLA, N.Y. About 100 students at the Valhalla Middle School played volleyball for a cause Friday and collected $2,300 that will be donated to Operation: Quiet Comfort, which provides gift bags and cards for injured American military personnel.
The "Hit to Heal Volleyball Tournament" utilized both gyms at the high school/middle school and parents contributed food that was served after the event.
Everyone had a great time, said Margo Doran, the physical education teacher at the middle school who supervised the event.
She worked with Cristina Conciatori, a middle school science teacher, who is the treasurer of Operation: Quiet Comfort, an international organization with 500 members that prepares bags that are sent to military hospitals for injured soldiers.
They include everything from toothbrushes to sweat shirts and magazines, she said. We send them to keep their morale up. Adults and children also write cards that are sent and we make quilts out of blue jeans with messages on them.
Money was raised from students and spectators who each paid $5 and a Kindle Fire was raffled off.
The event was the schools seventh annual volleyball fundraiser. Since 2006, Valhalla Middle School has raised more than $30,000 for charities and worthy causes, including the purchase of cooling vests for servicemen in Iraq, the Ronald McDonald House at Maria Fareri Childrens Hospital, Operation Smile, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, Doctors Without Borders and Gildas Club Westchester.
