A spokesperson for the NYPD confirmed Dan Sohail is charged with three counts of attempted assault, five counts of attempted assault (hate crime), reckless endangerment, reckless endangerment (hate crime), aggravated harassment, and more.
Officers responded to a 911 call for a motor vehicle collision at approximately 8:46 p.m., at 770 Eastern Parkway, an NYPD spokesperson said. A gray Honda sedan collided with the entrance doors at the bottom of a sloped driveway at the location, police said.
Photos from the scene shared by Yeshiva World News show the Honda sedan with New Jersey license plates lodged against the entrance. The outlet said that the driver showed up at a Yeshiva (Jewish learning center) in Carteret, NJ, the day before saying he wanted to convert. He was apparently "not taken seriously" and, feeling upset by that, plowed his car into the building, YWN says citing credible sources.
A motive had not been confirmed as of press time.
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani released the following statement:
Police said the operator of the vehicle was taken into custody. No further details about the driver or the circumstances of the crash were immediately released.
