Stopping vandals, as the stop sign on Drum Hill Road newly reads, is what the Wilton Police Department is trying to do.
Wilton police and residents have noticed graffiti on Old Boston Road, Kent Road, Old Belden Hill Road, Old Kings Highway, Drum Hill Road, Ridgefield Road and New Canaan Road. Lt. Donald Wakeman said the police department will patrol the areas more frequently in an attempt to reduce this vandalism.
"We also have our School Resource Officer attempt to gain information on the crime when meeting with students at the high school, as this type of crime is known to be commonly committed by teenagers," said Wakeman.
It's not known who is responsible for the spray painting. Wakeman said that graffiti-type criminal mischief is uncommon in town and that "it is quite possible that it is only one, or perhaps two persons responsible for it."
The police department is in charge of maintaining the road signs along town roads and will replace the signs as needed, according to Wakeman. The road signs on Connecticut state roads, such as New Canaan Road, must be replaced by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. The Wilton Department of Public Works is responsible for painting over graffiti left on roads.
The public works department urges residents to call them or the police if vandalism is noticed.
"We will take care of it," said Tom Thurkettle, director of public works.
