Vandals Strike Darien High School

DARIEN, Conn. – Darien High School was broken into and vandalized over the weekend.

The burglary was discovered by a school maintenance supervisor after he received a call from the school's alarm company Sunday evening reporting an intruder alarm. He found that someone had discharged several fire extinguishers in the building. The vandal or vandals also spray-painted the number “420” in green paint in several places as well as a green marijuana leaf.

Police could not determine how the intruders got into the school. The cost to clean up the damage was not known.

DUI and drug possession: A Darien man was arrested Sunday morning after stopping his car in the middle of an intersection without the headlights on, police said.

Police spotted Michael Costa, 26, of 26 Country Club Road, pull off Interstate 95 and stop his car at Post Road and Leroy Avenue. When an officer spoke to him, the odor of alcohol was detected, police said. Costa failed his field sobriety test and was arrested.

When officers were checking his car, they found a red pipe with marijuana residue, police said. He was charged with driving under the influence, possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to illuminate headlamps. He posted $250 bond and will go to court April 26.
