The collapse happened at 16 North Bond St. in Mount Vernon, where a building undergoing structural work gave way, according to city officials.

No injuries were reported.

City officials said the property's owner had received permits from the Mount Vernon Buildings Department in December 2025 to perform structural work on the building. Crews had begun shoring up the structure to stabilize it while construction was underway when the collapse occurred.

The building has since been condemned.

As a precaution, residents of the neighboring buildings at 14 and 18 North Bond St. were evacuated while officials conducted detailed interior and exterior structural inspections, including evaluations of the adjoining buildings and their roofs, to determine when it will be safe for occupants to return.

Several parked vehicles were also damaged in the collapse.

Power to the immediate area was shut off as a safety precaution, but was restored as of 3:10 p.m. on Thursday. All roads around the collapse have reopened, city officials said in an update.

The Mount Vernon Department of Public Works worked to remove debris from North Bond Street while city officials worked with the Buildings Department, Fire Department, Police Department, Office of Emergency Management, utility companies, and other agencies to conduct the investigation into the collapse.

City officials said the final stage of debris removal would occur on Friday, July 31. To allow this to happen, North Bond Street will be closed between Oak Street and Mount Vernon Avenue from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

While the road is closed on Friday, motorists should use alternate routes and expect delays in the area, officials said.
