USDA Guidelines say, "Eat Less"

You knew those garbage can-sized portions of popcorn weren't good for you. And that gargantuan-sized entrée at your favorite restaurant? You were right. You should've taken half of it home.

The United States Department of Agriculture agrees and is attempting to address the American obesity epidemic with its 2010 Dietary Guidelines. Basically, they implore us to eat less. Here are some highlights.

* Control your caloric intake and avoid eating over-sized portions.

* Concentrate on making vegetables half your plate of food rather than having veggies be relegated solely to side orders.

* Consider choosing fat-free or low-fat (1 percent) milk instead of whole milk.

* Compare sodium levels in processed foods such as soup, bread and frozen meals, and choose those  that contain less sodium.

* Drink water instead of sugary drinks.

What are some of your personal food guidelines? Sweets and seconds only on days beginning with the letter "S?" Let me know here, or email me, at [email protected]
