Unified School Gets It All Together

Like principals around the country, Cheryl Jensen-Gerner of Miller-Driscoll School was preparing for the start of the school year. However, not every principal had to adjust to their school doubling in size.

Jensen-Gerner was the principal of Tilford W. Miller School, and when the Board of Education decided to merge Miller with Ina E. Driscoll School in the spring, she was given the head position. Now, after months of preparation, the unified school is ready for the new year.

"I am very pleased -- we are all set," Jensen-Gerner said.

Thanks to the work of Jensen-Gerner and her staff, along with support from the PTA and Board of Education central office, unification went according to plan.

"We pretty much knew what we're getting into," Jensen-Gerner said. "It just takes a lot of time."

The teachers are all moved in and unpacked in their new classrooms, the principal said. She also said the building has been repainted so that it's not designated as Miller and Driscoll but by grade. The kindergarten "cottages" will be yellow, the first grade blue and second grade red.

The school's staff has been around all summer organizing classrooms. Parents and students got their first glimpse Thursday during "Meet the Teacher Day." The first day of school is Monday.
