The Next Generation plan calls for $1.55 billion in new bonding to hire new faculty, build new facilities, enroll more students and increase programs offered, including in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields, a news release said. It would also increase enrollment at the Stamford campus by 110 percent and add student housing, the release said.
“Since the UConn campus was placed in downtown Stamford, we have seen incredible demand for the classes offered there. I am delighted that with this plan, we will soon be more than doubling enrollment, and offering affordable housing to students to help manage the new growth,” Sen. Carlo Leone, D-Stamford and Darien, said in a release. He was one of the 29 state senators who voted in support of the bill; five were opposed.
The bill will now move on to the state House of Representatives for further action.
The proposal includes:
? $137 million in state funds to support a 30 percent increase in enrollment at UConn—adding 6,580 students and 259 faculty to the UConn-Storrs and UConn-Stamford campuses.
? Expansion of the School of Engineering by increasing enrollment by 70 percent.
? A 47 percent expansion in the total number of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) graduates.
? Addition of 50 STEM doctoral fellowships and creation of the premiere STEM honors program in the United States.
? Relocating the Hartford campus to improve accessibility, strengthen collaboration with regional business, and addition of real-world internships to help students launch careers.
? $1.54 billion in bonding to construct new STEM facilities, build out teaching and research labs, upgrade information technology, and renovate and build additional housing and parking.
