NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. Two Monroe College athletes received the schools first ever Scholar-Athlete awards at the graduation gala last week.
Softball first baseman Rhema Dutton and baseball pitcher Edvardas Matusevicius received the awards at Greentree Country Club in New Rochelle for their academic prowess, athletic performance and community service.
We are very proud of Rhema and Edvardas who have achieved so well on and off the field," said Athletic Director Bert Shillingford. "It's the first time we've presented this award and it really defines what the Mustangs are all about, being successful in all realms of life."
Dutton batted .306 and had 17 RBI for the Mustangs. She made the presidents list in each of her four semesters at Monroe. The Anchorage, Alaska native majored in baking and pastry arts and graduated with an associate degree.
Matusevicius, a Lithuanian native, finished 3-3 for Monroe. He struck out 58 batters, which ranked him third all-time in school history for strikeouts in a single season. He graduated with an associate degree in business administration.
To qualify for the award, a student-athlete must be a graduating sophomore with at least a 3.5 grade point average. The student must have played for two years of eligibility in a sport at Monroe and taken part in at least one community service activity. Sportsmanship and citizenship are also considered.
