At 1 a.m., the North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue responded to Cullum Apartments, a multistory building at 6299 Grand Ave., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said. Firefighters immediately encountered fire and heavy smoke within a 10th floor unit, Suarez said.
Reynaldo Tatis, 88 and a 72-year-old woman were pronounced dead at the scene, Suarez said. Two North Bergen police officers sustained minor injuries and were treated at Hackensack Medical Center, police said. The fire displaced 27 residents, Suarez said.
The fire is under investigation, though foul play is not suspected, Suarez said.
