The 52-year-old star, known for his role as the patriarch of the Jacobs family on HBO’s hit series Euphoria, shared the news with PEOPLE.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” Dane told the outlet. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
He is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart, and they have two teenage daughters.
Despite his diagnosis, Dane remains optimistic and is eager to continue his work, with production for Season 3 of Euphoria beginning in days.
Euphoria follows California high school students who seek hope while balancing the strains of love, loss, and addiction.
Dane stars on the show as Cal Jacobs, a married father of three boys known for his real estate ventures and philandering.
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week,” he told PEOPLE.
A San Francisco native, Dane moved to Los Angeles when he was 21, and appeared in such popular TV shows as Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, Roseanne, and Married... with Children.
He became widely known for his role as Mark Sloan on Grey's Anatomy, starting in 2006.
