Truck Driver in Rampage Identified

The driver of a 1998 GMC box truck that slammed into 12 cars and then a school bus with Stamford High students on board Tuesday afternoon has been identified as Christopher Simonelli, 30, of Frederick Street, Stamford.

Simonelli is in Stamford Hospital on Wednesday in the critical care unit with injuries from the multivehicle accident at Myrtle Avenue and East Main Street.

Of the 23 Stamford High students on the bus taken to Stamford Hospital were minor injuries, 17 of them have been released.

A woman hit by Simonelli's truck was in critical condition Tuesday but her injuries were not considered life threatening, Stamford Police Capt. Brian McElligott said.

"In all my time on the force, I've never seen such a big accident in such a compressed area where no one was killed," McElligott said. Police said Simonelli purposefully plowed the stolen truck into the more than dozen vehicles after a fight with his girlfriend.

The area is a very heavily trafficked part of downtown Stamford with many pedestrians and vehicles.

Stamford Fire and Rescue had to extricate Simonelli from the truck after he crashed it into the school bus. McElligott said, "The guy hit everything he could hit."

The investigation into the accident was continuing. Charges against Simonelli were expected to be brought at a later date.
