Troopers Begin 'Operation Hang Up' For Holiday

A traffic enforcement campaign called "Operation Hang Up" begins just in time for Thanksgiving, New York State Police announced Tuesday. The campaign, explained Major Michael Kopy, will target motorists who use their cell phone and other electronic devices while driving."Cell phone use and texting while driving continue to proliferate despite widespread public concern and acknowledgement that the behaviors are dangerous. They support widespread increased enforcement," read the announcement. The announcement cited research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which indicates that drivers who use hand-held devices are four times more likely to be involved in crashes that are serious enough to cause injuries. Police said that traffic volumes are at their heaviest during Thanksgiving, therefore increasing the risk of highway crashes. Violators who receive a ticket can face a maximum fine of $100, as well as a mandatory $60 surcharge.
