John Cook, a deputy school superintendent for the Diocese of Bridgeport, has been named interim principal of Trinity Catholic High School, according to Brian Wallace, director of communications for the diocese. Margaret Dames, the Diocese' superintendent of schools, made the appointment less than a week after the death of Trinity Principal Robert D'Aquila in order to assist the school community as it comes to grips with the untimely loss. The school also recently lost an assistant principal, Kevin Sutton, who died of cancer.
"After two losses at the school, Dr. Dames really needed to have continuity," said Wallace. He said a search for a new principal will be undertaken shortly. While there is a need to fill the position, the search will be thorough an unrushed, he said. "It won't be a highly prolonged search, but we'll need to start from zero. They'll want to do due diligence."
Wallace lauded Cook for his work at the Diocese. "He's done a fine job," said Wallace. Cook has worked in the areas of professional development and curriculum mapping for the diocese. His background is in science, and he has taught that subject in middle and high schools, as well as served as a school principal. He earned a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., and a master's degree from Central Connecticut State University. Cook developed Connecticut science standards from 2002 to 2004 as a member of the State Science Board. Having grown up on Thomaston, he currently lives in Watertown with wife, Marguerite, and their two children.
