STAMFORD, Conn. - The Trinity Catholic boys basketball team is hoping lightning strikes twice.
The Crusaders lost in the conference playoffs, but then embarked on a Cinderella run to the Class M state championship in 2011. Now in Class L, Trinity will try to duplicate last season's story after falling to Bassick in the conference championship.
Trinity Catholic (15-5) hosts conference opponent Fairfield Ludlowe in the first round of the Class L state tournament Monday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Walsh Court.
Unlike last season, seventh-seeded Trinity enters the tournament as favorites instead of a heavy underdog. The Crusaders have knocked off the likes of Bassick and Ridgefield in the regular season.
Trinity won the 2011 Class M state championship as the 18th seed. The Crusaders defeated top-ranked Career Magnet of New Haven, 57-51, in the finals.
Trinity is led by junior guard Schadrac Casimir, junior forward Jason Boswell, senior forward Kevin Leumene and 7-foot-1 sophomore center Paschal Chukwu. The Crusaders are coached by Mike Walsh.
