STAMFORD, Conn. One stray bounce of the baseball was all it took to sink the Trinity Catholic baseball team on Wednesday against unbeaten Staples, 4-2.
Knotted at 1-1 with the Crusaders in the fourth inning, a routine grounder hit by Staples' Zach Levins looked like a sure out as Trinity first baseman Jeff Cortese scrambled toward it. But the ball ricocheted off the first-base bag and into right field for a base hit. The lucky break ignited the Wreckers, who scored three runs on two hits and a sacrifice fly in the inning.
It was a tough loss for freshman starter Randy Polonia, who hurled four solid innings. Mike Polomba came on in relief to pitch three near-perfect innings, keeping the Crusaders within striking distance.
Neno Merritt cut the Staples' lead to 4-2 with an RBI single, but that would be as close as the Crusaders would get. Trinity managed to load the bases in the bottom of the fifth, but stranded the runners.
With the loss, Trinity drops to 3-2 on the season. The Crusaders will have to deal with another unbeaten team on Friday when they travel to 5-0 Greenwich for a 4 p.m. game.
