Changes are coming to the New Canaan Train Station, which could mean a tougher time for commuters finding parking. The state Department of Transportation starts a track improvement August 2, to accommodate new, larger commuter trains. They expect to finish work by November 30.
While the station is being renovated, the town needs to close spaces 201-263 in the south commuter parking lot, across the street from the Post Office. The spaces will close July 31. The Parking Commission decided in June that spaces 1-24 in the Locust Hill parking lot (across the street from the Fire Department) and on the upper level of the Talmadge Hill Lot (behind Town Hall and the Outback Teen Center) will accommodate displaced commuters.
Because Locust Street is normally a short-term lot, full-day commuters who park there will not have to pay at meters, as temporary parkers would. Instead, the Parking Bureau will place envelopes on cars in the 24 designated spaces each day. The envelopes have instructions for commuters to mail in their daily parking fees or pay online. Talmadge Hill is an eight-hour lot, so commuters there will simply pay at the municipal meters.
