In these challenging times, Westport is facing yet another test. Under a federal grant announced yesterday, the town will try to get 10 percent of its households to use more green energy while becoming more efficient. Joining the challenge will be Weston and Wilton.
First Selectman Gordon Joseloff said yesterday Westport and 12 other Connecticut towns would share a $4.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy as part of the Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge.
"From home energy assessments and clean energy sign-ups to home energy retrofits and installation of clean energy systems, there is something that everyone in Westport can do to meet this energy challenge," he said in a statement.
Residents will be offered assistance under the grant, which is being given under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The Energy Challenge could maintain almost 400 jobs, reduce an estimated 250,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide pollution, and save households nearly $150 million on their energy bills, according to the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund.
