Officials at Western Connecticut State University announced Nov. 29 that the personal records of 235,000 people may have been exposed to unauthorized access during a three-year period of security vulnerability. Although no evidence was found to indicate any files were improperly accessed, WestConn notified all involved individuals and offered up to two years of identity theft protection from AllClear ID.
The potentially affected parties include students, their families and high school students whose SAT scores were purchased by WestConn.
WestConn officials made statements apologizing for the error and blamed the security breach on an “incorrect setting on a piece of hardware associated with the university.” The university conducted an investigation involving the Board of Regents Information Security and Policy Office and the state Attorney General’s office. Officials said computer security has been dramatically increased following the breach and pledged to continue to improve safety measures.
