At 8:26 p.m., police responded to George King Village near Cabinet Street after a man intervened when he saw three dogs fighting, Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda said.
The dogs, owned by someone the man knows, turned on him, Miranda said. The man escaped, but lost consciousness after being bitten, Miranda said. He was pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m. , Miranda said. The man has not been identified.
Animal Control was notified and responded to the scene, Miranda said. The status of the dogs is unknown.
