NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. During what school officials termed the most successful athletic season in school history, the Monroe College womens volleyball, mens soccer and womens soccer teams are all currently nationally ranked by the National Junior College Athletic Association.
"We build our programs so that our teams can be successful," Monroe Athletic Director Bert Shillingford said. "We have quality coaches and the support of the college's administration that makes sure we have sufficient resources. But most important, we have student athletes who practice hard, go to class, and can now see the fruits of their labors."The Mustangs women's soccer team, with a record of 11-0-1, was the most recent team to be ranked, grabbing the No. 9 spot in last weeks voting. The womens volleyball team is ranked No. 15 at 27-2 and the mens soccer team is currently ranked No. 6 with a record of 11-1.
Having won its second consecutive NJCAA Division I Men's Soccer Region XV Championship, the men's soccer team is set to defend its title by competing in the District's Nov. 5 and 6 competition that will take place in Region XIX (N.J., Pa.). The women's soccer team narrowly defeated Nassau on Wednesday evening to take its second consecutive NJCAA Division III Women's Soccer Region XV title.
The women's volleyball program got a shot in the arm as legendary Puerto Rican coach Nephtali Delgado Reyes was brought on board right before the season. Coach Delgado Reyes has led the Mustangs to a 27-2 record and will lead the team in the NJCAA Division II Women's District Tournament at the County College of Morris (N.J.) on November 5 and 6.Cross country runner Keyvin Adams is the first Mustang to qualify for the National Cross Country meet, which will be held in New Mexico on Nov. 12."It's wonderful to be so highly-regarded," Shillingford said. "But rankings and reputations on pieces of paper are one thing, doing it on the field is another. We'd really love it if our teams could not only get to the national tournaments, but maybe even go all the way."
