The Sky Was Falling ... Sort Of

What's that in the sky? A bird? A plane? No, just a 500-pound chunk of external ceiling hanging off the Westport Corporate Center – and it was dangerously close to collapsing several stories into the building's main gas meter and piping.

The property manager at the 8 Wright St. center called the Westport Fire Department at 12:38 p.m. Thursday to request help. A chunk of the building's exterior was hanging on by little more than glue and tape.

The parking lot and building below the dangling danger were evacuated. Rescue Co. 3 responded and started using wood timber to protect the gas meter and piping in the event chunks rained down.

A high-lift construction aerial, resembling a cross between a crane and a utility truck, allowed a work crew to get close and start cutting the hanging rubble apart.

The danger was removed, piece by piece, as the fire crews waited. The scene was declared clear at 7:45 p.m.
