What's that in the sky? A bird? A plane? No, just a 500-pound chunk of external ceiling hanging off the Westport Corporate Center and it was dangerously close to collapsing several stories into the building's main gas meter and piping.
The property manager at the 8 Wright St. center called the Westport Fire Department at 12:38 p.m. Thursday to request help. A chunk of the building's exterior was hanging on by little more than glue and tape.
The parking lot and building below the dangling danger were evacuated. Rescue Co. 3 responded and started using wood timber to protect the gas meter and piping in the event chunks rained down.
A high-lift construction aerial, resembling a cross between a crane and a utility truck, allowed a work crew to get close and start cutting the hanging rubble apart.
The danger was removed, piece by piece, as the fire crews waited. The scene was declared clear at 7:45 p.m.
