The Circus Comes to Somers....Again

It should come as no surprise  that one of the best strategies to hold a successful fundraiser in Somers, known as The Cradle of the American Circus, is to hire one to raise money.

That is just what the Somers Volunteer Firefighters did on Friday and Saturday nights at Firemen’s Field on Route 202.

“We’ve been doing it for six or seven years now,” said Claire McLean. She is the first woman ever to be voted Fire Commissioner in Somers.

The Zerbini Family Circus, based in Florida, rolled into town complete with its huge blue and gold tent,  jugglers, acrobats, clowns and its amazing dog show. “All of the dogs are rescues,” McLean explains. “And there is never any animal abuse.”

Sorry, Somers residents, there was no elephant this year. But there was a camel and lots of kids of all ages had fun taking a bumpy ride on him.

Commissioner McLean describes the Zerbini as “a classy little circus." The admission price hasn't been raised in years. It's still $11.

The VFD hoped to earn about $1000 from the event. But the smile on every child's face? Priceless.
